Gujarat rains: IMD warns of heavy to very heavy showers today, schools closed AHMEDABAD: Heavy to very heavy rainfall lashed all parts of Gujarat on Sunday with cumulative rainfall at 94.2 mm, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) of the state government. The figures indicated that out of 251 talukas, 10 received more than 300 mm rainfall, 18 talukas 200-300 rainfall, and 62 talukas 100-200 mm rainfall.Gujarat rainForecast by India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated chances of moderate thunderstorms with gusty wind for districts such as Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar and Rajkot on Tuesday, whereas for other districts it could be light thunderstorm and lightning.Meanwhile, till 10 am, Rajkot has received 142 mm rainfall, followed by 125 mm in Lodhika and 92 mm in Kotda Sangani, both in Rajkot district. In all, 206 talukas have received 1 mm or more rainfall till 10 am with 17 of them – all in Saurashtra region – receiving more than 50 mm rains.State chief secretary Raj Kumar along with senior officials convened a meeting on Monday to review the situation and deploy teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in most affected areas. All primary schools were asked to remain closed on Tuesday, whereas other schools, colleges and educational institutes were asked to take a call after reviewing the weather conditions.Gujarat rainSynoptic situation indicated a deep depression over East Rajasthan moving west-southwestwards whereas other two systems are in the form of monsoon trough and offshore trough, according to the IMD bulletin. The system has now moved towards Saurashtra, and parts of the region are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains today. Meanwhile major cities of the state saw widespread waterlogging and inundation, throwing life out of gear. With Janmashtami festivities, citizens mostly remained home on Monday in Vadodara and Ahmedabad that received 316 mm and 149 mm rainfall respectively in 24 hours ending 6 am on Tuesday. Commuters were stranded and residents in low-lying areas had to leave homes after waters entered their residences.According to Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) figures, the city recorded 98 rescue calls that included saving 40 persons from a private bus stuck in a waterlogged underpass near Parimal crossroads. In all, over 60 trees fell down and seven structures fell down completely or partially due to heavy rains.
